چکیده

In the late 1970s, Professor Armstrong wrote a treatise on long-range forecasting that many readers considered irreverent and humorous, albeit very insightful and highly readable (Armstrong 1978). On the basis of a detailed review of the extant empirical research, Armstrong identified, described, and provided an evaluation of the various subjective and objective methods used in forecasting. Without mincing words, he clinically dissected the relative effectiveness and usefulness of each technique. Although readers can disagree with Armstrong’s strong opinions and conclusions, there can be no disagreement on the overall impact the book had on the science of forecasting. In his new magnum opus, Armstrong continues his tradition of extending the frontiers of knowledge on forecasting by incorporating 39 other experts as coauthors and contributors. In his inimitable style, Armstrong explains the need for “principles in forecasting” by narrating a personal experience. He writes (pp. 4–5):

Evaluating Forecasting Methods

Ideally, forecasting methods should be evaluated in the situations for which they will be used. Underlying the evaluation procedure is the need to test methods against reasonable alternatives. Evaluation consists of four steps: testing assumptions, testing data and methods, replicating outputs, and assessing outputs. Most principles for testing forecasting methods are based on commonly accepted...

Rule-Based Forecasting: Using Judgment in Time-Series Extrapolation

Rule-Based Forecasting (RBF) is an expert system that uses judgment to develop and apply rules for combining extrapolations. The judgment comes from two sources, forecasting expertise and domain knowledge. Forecasting expertise is based on more than a half century of research. Domain knowledge is obtained in a structured way; one example of domain knowledge is managers= expectations about trend...

Implications of Cointegration for Forecasting: A Review and an Empirical Analysis

Cointegration has different theoretical implications for forecasting. Several empirical studies have compared the out of sample forecasting performance of cointegrted VECMs against unrestricted VARs in levels and in differences. The results of these studies have been generally mixed and inconclusive. This paper provides a comprehensive review over the subject, and also examines the effects...

Extrapolation for Time-Series and Cross-Sectional Data

Extrapolation methods are reliable, objective, inexpensive, quick, and easily automated. As a result, they are widely used, especially for inventory and production forecasts, for operational planning for up to two years ahead, and for long-term forecasts in some situations, such as population forecasting. This paper provides principles for selecting and preparing data, making seasonal adjustmen...
